The first step to conventional repair is sanding down to metal and lifting the damage back into shape.

Other techniques of lifting damage requires holes to be made to lift damage into a shape that somewhat appears factory.

Body Filler is then added to make the panel flat again.

This is a good visual of the panel sanded and body filler being added. This process is quite invasive as you can see.

After the body filler is added it is sanded down to get a shape as close to factory as possible.

Here you see a Hail damaged vehicle sanded and filled. Over time body filler can shrink or even lift from panel if not done properly. Where PDR lasts forever and saves your factory Paint!

This may be an extreme case but the is what can happen when the body shop uses body filler and is effected from weather and/or new damage.
